NEW FOCUS & CONTROL CLASS

The Flashing Canines are pleased to offer a new class to the public beginning in the September session – Focus & Control. There are two main principles taught in the class. The goal is to a) improve human to dog communication through focus and b) help dogs with fear or excitement issues to control their inner instincts and impulses. As is the case with all of our classes, we use motivational methods of training including clicker training. The class promises to be educational, informative and fun.

2009 AAC ALBERTA/NWT REGIONAL AGILITY CHAMPIONSHIPS

New Flash... All three teams attending from Flashing Canines qualified for the Nationals! Way to go Sue & Jetta, Nicole & Cruise, Barb & Giro. Yes, the 2009 AAC Alberta/NWT Regional Agility Championships was a huge success.

The fun began on Friday with two runs of Steeplechase - all three of the Flashing Canines teams advanced to the Sunday finals! Saturday and Sunday brought over 160 teams to run the Regional events of two each of Standard, Jumpers and Gamblers.

In addition to qualifying for the "Big Event", the overall aggregate standings for our club were outstanding! Sue & Jetta placed 6th in the 10" Specials Division, Nicole & Cruise placed 3rd in the 10" Veterans Division and Barb & Giro placed 2nd in the 22" Specials Division.

For the largest Regional event run to date, a huge "hats off" to all the organizers from both Flashing Canines and Go Dog Go is in order. Three of our members attended for the sole purpose of helping to make this event happen. Thanks tons to Gail, Tiffany and Olivia. As always, without the organizers and volunteers, the competitors wouldn't be able to run.

So the next "road trip" is Ottawa to run at the Nationals July 30 to August 2. Gail will be attending, once again, to lend her ever so knowledgeable hand. Barb & Giro will be attending to experience their first National event as a competitor. Stay tuned... we'll keep you posted on the "hot dogs" in the country in August.

REDCLIFF DAYS

Mother nature smiled on us again with a beautiful sunny day. Our demonstrations were not without some unexpected challenges – scheduling conflicts and technical difficulties added to the often-unpredictable behaviour of dogs. Thank you to all the spectators for their understanding and patience. We hope everyone enjoyed the show. And a big "thanks" to the Redcliff Days organizers for including us in the celebration.

Greeting Rituals:

A dog that knocks your guests over at the door can be an embarrassment or cause an injury. A dog that jumps up is seeking attention. An effective way of stopping the behaviour is to turn your back, don't say anything and don't make eye contact. The dog will soon put his paws on the ground. Reinforce that by turning around to face him again. Most enthusiastic dogs will very likely jump up again. Be calm, say nothing and turn away again, turning back only when appropriate until he chooses not to jump up. When he does, reward that good behaviour with a high value treat.

Now it is time to increase the challenge - add your own joyful greeting. Speak with great enthusiasm until you encourage the dog to jump on you again. When the dog jumps up in response to your energetic greeting, just continue to turn away. Repeat this until the dog chooses to greet you with all four paws on the floor. Have others help you by rehearsing their own greeting with the dog. If the dog gets no attention from guests for jumping up and tons of reinforcement for a more appropriate greeting ritual, the jumping up will soon be a thing of the past.
